RQOTD 5/27/2020

Post by Jan Mosier »

Do you have a fire ant problem where you live? If so, what do you use to kill them?

We have a major problem here, mounds all over the yard. I'm heading to Lowe's tomorrow to pick up a couple bags of granules to hopefully kill them. I've heard people say pour grits or rice on the mounds too.

No fire ants here that I've encountered. Shawn says PA doesn't have them??

We have them here, and they come into the house. There used to be a very effective chalk sold in Chinese stores. The chalk doesn’t make it to the U.S. anymore. We buy some granules at Home Depot.

We have lots of ants outside, but not inside, and definitely not fire ants!

We had them when we lived in SW Florida and used Home Defense spray. Thankfully we haven't seen any here in Central Florida.

Not a problem here! at least in our houses. We have had them outdoors years ago but I haven't seen any for years. Don't step on their pile. They will bite your foot up.

Finally some random info to help someone! Use diatomaceous earth! You can get it at Home depot or any gardening centre. It looks like a powder, but it is finely ground bone that cuts them and they die. If you don't have that anywhere, buy the silica cat litter stones, and crush them in a mortar and pestle and it will do the same thing. Only put the stuff on with gloves.

Can't say we have a problem; have seen a few different red ant hills over the years
