RQOTD: August 23rd

I live on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. We are famous for MANY things but mostly for our world class salmon fishing and for the show called Port Protection on the National Geographic Channel. Our island is 45 miles wide at its widest point and 100 miles long but we only have about 3,000 residents. Our town of Hollis is known for its gold mining. We have an active gold mine just 5 miles from here and you can take tours at certain times or if you know people which we do. About 100 years ago Hollis had a population of about 1,000 people who were mostly miners or supporting the miners. The Maybeso Creek is famous for its salmon run but also for its name. The old saying was "Is there gold in that creek" and the answer was "Maybe so..." LOL! We take tourists/visitors to the Maybeso bridge in the summertime to see the bears and eagles eating the salmon. At times it's quite the local gathering!

We're also just a 3 hour ferry ride from Ketchikan which is the first town you usually visit when on an Alaskan cruise. There are lots of things to see and do in Ketchikan as well. When traveling to our island, you have to stop in Ketchikan and either catch the ferry or a float plane to get to our island. You can't drive to Ketchikan or to our island!

And the show Port Protection is filmed at the northernmost point of our island. Steve went to high school with one of the long time residents there. Occasionally we see some of the residents of Port Protection in the main town on the island called Craig.

There are a few restaurants here that are all local and feature local food. The best one burned down a few years ago which is sad because it was quite good!

Once we have our new home finished sometime next year we will have this cabin for our guests so if you want to come visit let us know!

OMG Lisa you HAVE to come up and visit!!! Even when it's nasty outside it's a beautiful place and always looks different! Once they open up the cruises you could come up or you could do the ferry system which is called the Alaska Marine Highway System. That way you could drive and see a lot of places you wouldn't see on the cruise ships. They don't go up to Anchorage or Fairbanks but you'd see a lot on the cruise ships too.
