February 2025 - Fairy Tales
Image

On February 26th we Celebrate "National Tell a Fairy Tale Day" - But why not celebrate it all MONTH long?? This month we intend to do just that! Let's celebrate the folklore genre and the stories of magic, enchantments and mythical beings that all take place "Once Upon a Time".

A new Blue Plate Special challenge is posted each Monday (sketch), Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Participants have until the 3rd of the following month to complete and post their creations in the Cookin' up Creations Gallery.

Prize will be a $20 Gift Certificate to their favorite online store (random drawing)....

Today’s challenge is inspired by the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty. In the fairytale, a jealous villain (Maleficent) curses the infant princess Aurora. Despite the efforts of three good fairies to keep Aurora safe, the princess pricks her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and falls into a deep sleep on her 16th birthday. In the end, the monstrous Maleficent is defeated and the princess is awoken by her true love, Prince Phillip.

As a child watching the movie, Maleficent fascinated me with her black cloak and horns. She really is one of the most imaginative villains ever created! I also always loved (still do!) the pink dress that Aurora wears on the movie poster:

Your challenge is to use the sketch below from Susan Stringfellow and represent both Maleficant and Aurora by using black and pink on your layout. Other colors are allowed but the main colors (at least 50% of your layout) should be black and pink. You can use the whole double page sketch or just the right or left page for inspiration. Also, include at least one circle to represent the spinning wheel from the fairytale.

Here is my example. I flipped the sketch to accommodate the direction my daughter and I are facing in the photos. I also altered a few design elements to work with the number of photos I had from this snow day.

I hope you enjoy the sketch as much as I did…I love using leftover scraps to create beautiful pages! Happy scrapping everyone!
